Compress a PDF to under 200 KB

Enough room for a few scanned pages or a short document with photos. We aim just under 200 KB and show the exact byte count.

What we fitted under 200 KB

Double the space of 100 KB makes a real difference to quality. These are our own test files, run through this page's tool:

Test fileBeforeAfterImages
1-page scanned certificate282 KB132.1 KB150 dpi
5 pages of scanned notes669 KB192.3 KB72 dpi
4 phone photos of documents4.93 MB172.6 KB60 dpi
10-page scan at 300 dpi8.76 MB297.3 KB (missed)50 dpi

A single scanned page doesn't even need to be pushed: at 150 dpi it looked the same as the original, with room to spare. The five pages of notes landed just under the limit at 72 dpi, and every word was readable, subscripts included.

The four phone photos are the borderline case. They fitted at 60 dpi, where the normal text still reads but the 7 pt small print blurred. If your document relies on fine print (reference numbers, signatures, stamps), check those first.

Files that are too big for 200 KB

The 10-page scan bottomed out at 297 KB, so the tool told us it couldn't reach 200 KB. That's about 30 KB a page at the lowest setting; at a readable 72 dpi, the same scan needs around 70 KB a page. So for a 200 KB limit, plan on two or three scanned pages per file:

  • Split the PDF into smaller parts if the form takes several uploads.
  • Leave out blank pages and the back of single-sided documents.
  • If you're scanning, choose 150 dpi and greyscale for text-only pages.

Steps

  1. Choose your PDF. The 200 KB chip is preselected.
  2. Press Compress PDF. We start with the highest resolution and step down only as needed.
  3. The result shows the size in KB and in exact bytes. If the result is close to 200 KB, the byte count is the number to trust.
  4. Download, open, and read it once before you upload it.

How it works

Step 1

Upload the PDF

The 200 KB target is preselected. Switch to another size any time.

Step 2

Gentlest setting first

We look for the highest image resolution that still lands under 200 KB, so a lightly scanned file keeps far more detail than a fixed "low" preset would leave.

Step 3

Download and verify

You'll see the final size in KB and in bytes. Open it, check the pages read well, then send it.
