Compress an image to under 20 KB

For photo and signature boxes on online forms. Your image stays in your browser, and we keep it as sharp as 20 KB allows.

What 20 KB looks like

We ran seven test images through this page. A small photo or signature fits easily; a full phone photo has to give up most of its pixels.

Signature scanned at 300 dpi31.7 KB16.6 KB1200 × 400, 79%

Screenshot of a form88.5 KB19.5 KB543 × 339, 65%

The portrait and the signature kept every pixel. Side by side with the originals, the eyes, eyebrows and the thin pen strokes looked the same; the only change was quality, which nobody will spot at 79%.

The phone photo is a different story. 12 million pixels can't fit in 20 KB, so it came out at 349 × 262. A face filling the frame stays recognisable at that size, but small writing in the background turned to blur. For a 20 KB limit, crop the photo to your head and shoulders first: fewer pixels to store means more quality for the ones that matter.

When we warn you

If the result drops below 50% quality, or has to shrink to under half its width and under 300 pixels on its longest side, the result card says so instead of a plain “Done”. A phone photo taken upright triggered it: it fitted at 223 × 297. Open the file and check the face or signature is still clear before you upload it.

Steps

  1. Crop to the face or signature if you can.
  2. Add the image above and press Compress Image.
  3. Compare the before and after previews, then download the JPG.

Need a whole document under a limit instead? Use Compress PDF, which can aim for a size too.

How it works

Step 1

Add your photo or signature

One JPG, PNG or WebP. 20 KB is already picked, and nothing is uploaded.

Step 2

Quality first, then pixels

A 600 × 800 portrait fitted at full size, at 79% quality. Only big photos get fewer pixels.

Step 3

Check the preview

The result shows before and after side by side, with the exact bytes. Zoom in on the eyes or the pen strokes before you upload.
